Ooty E-Pass
Planning a trip to Ooty, the Queen of Hill Stations, is always exciting – but before you pack your bags, there’s one important step you can’t miss: getting your Ooty e-Pass. Introduced to regulate vehicle entry and protect the fragile Nilgiri ecosystem, the e-Pass is now a mandatory requirement for all private vehicles heading into Ooty. Whether you’re travelling for a day trip or a long holiday, this online pass ensures smooth entry through the district’s checkpoints.
The e-Pass will be checked at district entry points such as Kunjappanai Checkpost (from Mettupalayam side), Burliar Checkpost (from Coonoor side), Pattavayal Checkpost (from Kerala side), and Thalur Checkpost (from Karnataka side).

Important Notes & Limitations about Ooty E-Pass
1) The Ooty e-Pass is mandatory for all non-local (private, tourist) vehicles
2) To manage environmental impact and congestion, daily vehicle caps apply:
- Weekdays (Monday–Friday): up to 6,000 private vehicles per day
- Weekends (Saturday–Sunday): up to 8,000 private vehicles per day
3) Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. For example, anecdotal reports indicate that on some days, weekend quotas (8,000) filled up as early as mid-day.
4) Electric vehicles (EVs) are given priority when e-passes are issued, promoting sustainable tourism.
5) Ensure all information in your application—travel dates, vehicle details, passenger count—is accurate and consistent, as mismatches can lead to denial at checkpoints.
6) Both digital and printed versions of the e-pass (with QR code) must be readily accessible for verification at entry points. The e-pass is valid only for the specific dates applied. Any change in plans requires a fresh application. If you anticipate traveling on a weekend, it’s best to apply early—ideally 1–2 days in advance—for a better chance of securing a slot.
